How did Buddha and his followers know that they had attained Nirvana one another?

How ? some kinds of miracles like flying, divine eye, divine ear, etc? I also wonder where devas (deities according to scriptures) are right now. I, myself, am a Buddhist. I know it is such an annoying question. But I'm pretty curious. Thank you.
