What educational background do I have to have when I want to teach English as a second language?

My son teaches English in China. He has no background in teaching although he does have a BA in Sociology. The main thing that the school was looking for was a native speaker of English. If your accent is typical of a native speaker you will be fine, but if not no amount of credenials is going to get you a great job.
